LANCASTER
Lancashire County Council has listened to the residents of Lancaster district – and is considering deferring the possible closure of secondary schools in the area.
Proposals to close Skerton and Hornby High Schools next year could go on hold to allow time to explore a new suggestion which could see them continuing on their present sites.
The two schools have put forward an alternative plan which would involve federating the two schools.
County Councillor Alan Whittaker, who has been leading the review of secondary education in the district, said: “All along I have told the detractors of our proposals that we would be willing to consider any sensible alternatives that were put forward.
“Now Skerton and Hornby Schools themselves have come up with this idea of federating, so we think that it is fair to consider allowing their proposal to be investigated.
“This option will be given full consideration along with all others by the cabinet member for schools on 21 January.
“This has been a genuine consultation process, and from the beginning the county council has been transparent in its handling of the review.”
More than 2,000 responses were received to the county council’s consultation on a proposal to close Skerton and Hornby High Schools and enlarge Central High School as a result of falling school rolls.
There are ongoing discussions between Lancashire County Council and the Department for Children, Schools and Families about the possibility of establishing an academy in Lancaster at a later date.
PRESTON
In Preston, the proposal to close Tulketh Community Sports College from August 2008 and to temporarily enlarge Fulwood High School and Arts College is to go forward for consideration on 21 January.
Almost 100 responses were received to the recent consultation. A wide range of views were expressed and these will be considered very carefully. A particular issue raised relates to the future of the Tulketh site.
A county council spokesperson emphasised that if the proposal is agreed, the Tulketh school site would be used by the enlarged Fulwood High School and Arts College for the time being and there would be negotiations to safeguard the sports facilities for school and community use.
